How to get out of a blogging funk when you have writer’s block.
So, a few months back, I got into a real bad blogging rut where I stopped blogging completely for like 4 months (it’s bad, I know).
And while it was for a good reason (college finals, yikes!), it still sucked.
There are many successful bloggers out there that manage to blog while still having a job or college they need to attend to.
I knew that I had to change something if I wanted to succeed in blogging.
And you’ve probably also been in a blogging rut yourself, and it can happen at any stage, even if you’ve just started blogging.
Let’s get started, shall we?
1. Figure out what your trigger is:
The first step to overcoming writer’s block and a blogging rut is to try and figure out what it is that gets you into one in the first place.
Maybe you’re like me and you’re busy with college.
Or maybe you have a 9-5 job.
It might even just be mental fatigue.
Whatever it is, figure out what it is that stops you from pursuing your blogging career.
This will allow you to better figure out what approach you need to take in order to fix the issue, and get out of your blogging rut and be creative again.
2. Create a new routine:
If you’re newer to blogging, you probably still haven’t created a new routine for yourself that implements blogging.
And I totally get that.
But it is important to change your old routine and create time for you to work on your blog, preferably every day, especially in the beginning when you’ve only just started your blog.
If you want to rank on search engines like Google, you need to constantly put out new, valuable content.
And you need to put out a lot in the beginning, since Google doesn’t recognize your blog yet.
So try writing every day, even if it’s just a few paragraphs, it all helps in the end.
3. Join Facebook groups:
Joining Facebook groups is a great way to engage with other bloggers, both in the same niche as yours and different ones.
Not only will you be able to connect with others, but you can also learn from them and get inspired by their experiences.
Let them know about your struggles, you will be surprised to see how many also struggle from the same things as you.
Try joining around 5 groups, you don’t want to join too many groups to the point where it becomes overwhelming and stressful.
Choose a few boards that you like and that are active, and start engaging with other bloggers.
4. Try new things:
Change can be scary sometimes, but it can be what you need to do in order to move forward and make progress.
Maybe you don’t like the look and feel of your blog anymore, well now’s the time to change it!
Try out new themes, new designs, new Pinterest templates.
There are many things to learn in this blogging world, and you’re going to be making many mistakes, but that is completely normal and totally okay!
What’s important is to learn from those mistakes.
Figure out what isn’t working for you and change it.
Try changing your writing style, show more of your personality in it, connect more with your readers and engage with them.
Add interesting call to actions at the end of your post to start interesting conversations with your readers.
Create a community, make your blog a place that makes you happy and that excites you, which will in return make you want to work hard and make progress.
5. Plan ahead:
Now that you’re inspired and motivated to start blogging again, you should devote a day to planning where you want to take your blog.
Spend the day coming up with new blog post ideas, and create a content strategy and calendar.
You basically want to take a day where you can make your goals and plans more clear.
Often times we find ourselves really overwhelmed with all the blogging tasks we need to do; we have to finish a post, create a pin for it, then we need to promote it, etc.
It all gets pretty overwhelming, and so focusing on creating a clear plan for your blog helps relieve the stress you’re feeling and allows you to set clearer goals.
So, here’s what I want you to do:
- Decide what you want to plan things on: your phone or a notebook.
- Create a list of blog posts ideas that you are able to write right now, and blog posts that you aren’t able to create just yet (maybe you plan on making spring home decor, but it isn’t spring yet).
- Start outlining each post.
- Create Pinterest graphics for each blog post you’ve decided you want to write.
These are the basic steps of overcoming a blogging rut, because having a clear plan and a list of blog post ideas can help you take action and actually motivate you to blog, whereas not having any idea on what to publish is more likely to make you unmotivated.
I actually made a whole blog post on How to increase your productivity and blog more efficiently, which can also help motivate you and get you back on track.
6. Bulk write your posts:
Once you’ve created a list with some blog post ideas, you can start outlining each post.
This makes it much easier to actually write the whole blog post, especially when you’re getting out of a blogging rut.
Bulk writing your posts is a great way to have a few blog posts ready for when you aren’t feeling as creative and motivated to actually sit down and write a 2000+ word post.
Learn how I batch create my blog content!
All you would really have to do is create some Pinterest graphics, which is actually pretty fun and is actually easy to do, and then promote your post.
So try to finish a few posts and have them completely ready to publish, that way, when you’re tight on time, you will have fresh content you can publish.
7. Update your old blog posts:
The more you write and the more you blog, the better you become at it.
You most likely improved your style of writing so much since your first blog post, even if you’ve only been blogging for a couple of months.
It is therefore important to update your old posts, because not only can you make it better, but you will also be able to link it to your newer posts which can decrease your bounce rate.
Another thing you will be able to do is better optimizing your older posts for SEO.
If you’re still new to blogging and have no clue on what SEO is, it’s basically search engine optimization.
8. Bulk write emails:
In the midst of a blogging rut, you might totally forget about your email list, especially if you haven’t built a following yet.
But it’s important that you focus your time on building your email list as well.
Spend some time coming up with email ideas, and start bulk writing them then schedule them to be sent out.
You can, for example, start by writing an email explaining where you’ve been and why you haven’t been as active.
Email lists are a great way to engage with your readers, so share your story with them, but still offer them some kind of value.
You can also repurpose an old blog post and use the most important parts of it to create an email.
Another thing you should probably do is create a new freebie.
When was the last time you created a freebie to give away to your subscribers?
Create something new and exciting that will really help them solve a particular problem.
9. Consider guest posts:
Another thing you can do is have someone guest post on your blog.
This gives you more time to work on your blog and figure things out.
But of course, you need to make sure that the post is relevant to your target audience and that it provides value.
You probably also want to create your own graphics for the post and optimize it for search engines.
With that being said, it can be a great help when you’re in a blogging rut and struggling to write a blog post by yourself or if you haven’t really come up with any blog post ideas yet.
10. Take a short break:
The last thing would be to take a short break if you really feel like you need one.
It can be a great way to regenerate and get inspired.
You can try taking a few days off, where you completely forget about blogging, but you might still be getting new ideas, so you should probably keep a notebook or even your phone to add them to your list of blog post ideas.
And that was it!
I really hope you found these tips helpful, and that you get inspired to get back to blogging!

Thank you for this information! At only give months in, in feel like it’s way too soon to be in a rut, yet I keep finding myself there. I’m sitting down this weekend and coming up with a definitive plan for next year to grow my blog!
YES!! I love this! I know that sitting down and actually writing it down can be so daunting but honestly, once it’s done, I promise you’ll have a huge weight lifted off your shoulders and you can focus on growth. Cheers! Sasha
I always get a writer’s block! I get ideas on what to write about only to stare at the cursor for hours. I need to try bulk writing and see if that helps!

Hi Maureen! I totally find that when I prep content in batches, I find it much easier to write. I also find that when I’m really stumped, I try talk to text instead of writing- sometimes it just helps things flow a little easier. Thanks for reading 🙂
